Saturday is typically a day to sleep in, but on June 16th, CSX employees from across their network, partnered with United Way of Northeast Florida, Greenscape of Jacksonville and Communities In Schools of Jacksonville at 7:30am to clean up the landscape of Jeff Davis Middle School.
CSX specialist in corporate citizenship and special events, Shannon Goss, contacted United Way to coordinate a community engagement project as part of their management training program. Like many business groups, CSX focuses on providing community service projects for their employees.
CSX partnered with Greenscape of Jacksonville, a not-for-profit organization created to improve the Jacksonville landscape, and the two worked with the Achievers For Life mentoring program of Communities In Schools of Jacksonville, a program funded by UWNEFL, to plan a Saturday morning dedicated to cleaning up the Jeff Davis Middle School campus.
With mulch donated by Duval County Public Schools and trees and plants donated by Greenscape, thirty CSX employees came together to prune, mulch, and plant Crepe Myrtle trees on the school’s campus. They also repaired and pressure washed a pavilion that sits in the school’s courtyard as part of phase one of the landscaping project.
Phase two is set to take place in October where they will continue to clean up and mulch the grounds of the school.
